Farrell went from a directionless wise guy from Dublin to major Hollywood player in only three years. He was able to stand out in Ireland in a market saturated with aspiring actors. His first movie role was enough to catch the attention of England's eminent broadcaster, the BBC. Finally, it was word of mouth that got him his first American film role, which hurled him onto the fast track to stardom. Serendipity alone cannot explain Colin Farrell's Hollywood success. Sure, he got a few lucky breaks (several, in fact), but being in the right place at the right time is only half the battle. The man is just plain impressive.

Farrell appeared in the title role of Alexander the Great in 2004's Alexander, which received mixed reviews. The film was marked by controversy, including homoerotic scenes with other men. Both the movie, including Oliver Stone's directing and story telling of Alexander, and Hephaistion's bisexual aspects, were heavily criticized by some historians and film critics who saw it as an inaccurate and misleading representation of the characters' sexualities.
